Three surveys were used to collect and analyze information from schools, parents and children: the Early Development Instrument (EDI), the Preparation for School Experience Survey (PSE), and the Parent Interviews and Direct Assessments of Children Survey (PIDACS). In addition to the surveys, community maps were created to provide visual portraits of local resources. The PSE was created by Northumberland Child Development Centre specifically for the UEY project, and is still used by local school boards today. Please contact us for more information on this valuable research tool. |
The local research was conducted by Human Resources and Social Development Canada, the Offord Centre for Child Studies (McMaster University), the Trent Valley Centre (Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto), and R.A. Malatest & Associates Ltd. |
Northumberland Child Development Centre was the Project Sponsor of UEY, with key partners including Northumberland County Community and Social Services, the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board, the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board, and Northumberland Family YMCA Ontario Early Years Centres. These partners worked closely with Northumberland Child Development Centre to manage the project’s local activities. |

Understanding the Early Years (UEY) is a three-year research project that was funded by Human Resources and Social Development Canada. UEY was designed to provide our community with information which will help give our children the best possible start in life. Northumberland County was one of twenty-one sites selected across Canada to participate in the research that took place from 2006 to 2009, and was sponsored by Northumberland Child Development Centre. |
