Three surveys are being used to collect and analyze information from schools, parents and children. The Early Development Instrument (EDI), the Preparation for School Experience Survey (PSE), and the Parent Interviews and Direct Assessments of Children Survey (PIDACS). In addition to the surveys, community maps will be created to provide visual portraits of local UEY information. |

The local research is being conducted by: Human Resources and Social Development Canada, Offord Centre for Child Studies (McMaster University), Trent Valley Centre (Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto), and R.A. Malatest & Associates Ltd. |

Northumberland Child Development Centre is the Project Sponsor. Other key partners in this initiative include: Northumberland County Community and Social Services, Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board, Peterborough, Victoria, Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board and Northumberland Family YMCA Ontario Early Years Centre. These partners are working with Northumberland Child Development Centre to manage the local project activities. |

Understanding the Early Years in Northumberland County |

Understanding the Early Years (UEY) is a three-year research project funded by Human Resources and Social Development Canada. UEY has been designed to provide our community with information which will help give our children the best possible start in life. Northumberland County is one of twenty-one sites selected across Canada to participate in the research. The Northumberland UEY initiative is sponsored by Northumberland Child Development Centre. |

The Community Coalition is made up of individuals from children’s agencies in Northumberland County. The Coalition will examine the research data and develop a Community Action Plan. |

UEY bulletins are published every few months to update the community on UEY progress and events. Bulletins are distributed through local schools and children's agencies. If you would like to receive a copy of the latest UEY bulletin, contact Northumberland Child Development Centre. |

The Community Action Plan may include recommendations to: ¨ Add more child care centres ¨ Build new playgrounds ¨ Provide early identification and support for young children whose development is at risk. |
